The University of Coimbra (UC), founded in 1290, is a public university whose mission spans education, research and knowledge transfer. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013, UC ranks among the world’s top 500 universities. UC offers 46 bachelor’s, 142 master’s and 79 doctoral programmes. Its research ecosystem includes 12 academic units and 38 research centres with ~2,100 researchers. The Department of Geography and Tourism at the Faculty of Arts delivers tourism education at all levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD and other courses) and partners with CEGOT—formally recognised in 2008—which unites 163 researchers. CEGOT’s Group “Tourism, Heritage & Territory” advances fundamental and applied research on tourism, leisure, culture and territorial development.
